Sundays are a great time to slow down, calm the nervous system and ground yourself. For me, it’s always about a full day of self-care. Morning and nighttime skincare routines, planning healthy meals for the upcoming week, grocery shopping which I love to do, writing in my gratitude journal, listening to music, making a nice meal, meditating, buying my favourite flowers and magazine, tidying, de-cluttering, getting outside in my beautiful neighbourhood or a park to walk my little dog Hugo, reading, listening to an inspiring podcast, being creative, watching something that makes me feel good, enjoying a glass of perfectly chilled champagne, making a small to-do list for the week ahead, and on occasion, a peak at my goal list.
Which brings me to something important. We’re early into 2021, and this past Sunday got me thinking about goals. Each year I have a goal list that gets revised throughout the year. I had a number of lofty goals on my list originally this year that realistically are not going to happen. In fact most of my list won’t be happening and I’m not going to feel shameful, guilty, or like I’ve failed.
Now is not the time to make a lofty goal list. Under the current circumstances of overwhelming stress on our minds and bodies, our ability to engage in goal-oriented behaviour is reduced. Yes, we’re twelve months in the pandemic now but our environment hasn’t really changed. We have to be mindful that this isn’t failure that we aren’t pursuing our big lofty goals. What we should be doing is mitigating stress, and grounding ourselves so we can mentally be in a healthier state to start thinking about bigger goals. Be gentle on yourself - now is not the time. Why would you think now is the time to check off your goal list? We aren’t in circumstances that are conducive to thriving at all.
Make Sundays the day to slow down and do all the things you love. Focus on being kind to yourself. Nourish yourself. This is how you ground yourself, and how you’ll feel, do and be your very best self. This is how you’ll thrive. You’ll achieve a sense of calm, you’ll have clarity - which means you’ll be better positioned to think about that lofty goal list for the future, but for now make small attainable goals of things you can easily cross off in a day which will help you feel good about yourself and feel like you’re accomplishing something.
